Lakehead Ironworks Inc. was originally founded by my father Josef Quast in 1976. I started part-time with my father fabricating components and scrolls. At that time we were known as Lakehead Ornamental Ironwork Inc. We specialized in iron handrails and steel stairs for the commercial and residential sectors.
In the 1970’s and 80’s the demand for customized railings was enormous. We had the privilege of building some very intricate and elaborate handrails during this time. As times changed so did the company and the work we performed.
In 1990 I purchased the business from my father. Over the years I have grown the business from a 2500 square foot shop to an 11,000 square foot, state of the art fabrication facility. I have also taken on a business partner to help with the ever growing managerial responsibilities. Andy Locke, Vice President of Lakehead Ironworks Inc. is a machinist by trade and has over twenty years of metal working and construction experience.
Currently, the majority of our business is in the commercial and industrial sectors fabricating structural steel and miscellaneous metals, both in Northern Ontario and abroad. We have earned a reputation as specializing in unique, custom structures.
Miscellaneous metals are still a significant part of our business. In the past three plus decades we have fabricated a vast range of custom products, from the complex to the strange. We have created frames, bulkheads, chandeliers, canopies, catwalks, staircases, handrails, ultra modern and antique style items, trailers, gates and candle holders just to name a few.
Over the past several years we have set up a new division of Lakehead Ironworks Inc. along with a new, dedicated work area. This heavy industrial division handles the repair and modification of large mining equipment. Our upgraded yard and shop capabilities allow us to unload and manipulate work pieces up to 35,000 LB
During the past decade we have handled the erection of many pre-engineered buildings. We now offer our services as a general contractor to develop pre-engineered buildings from the concept stage to completion.
We have experience working with mild steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, aluminum, galvanized steel and brass.
